First of all, you need to decide what you would like to use the tablet for. The most basic use cases are: watching movies, reading books, internet surfing, games or working with documents. In case you are going to buy a tablet to read e-books (namely books, not online magazines or whatever), you’d better paid your attention to e-readers as their screen is much safer for reading as it is based on electronic ink (or e-ink) technology.
So let's go through the main characteristics of any tablet.
Platform. If case you need to run specific applications for Windows, you will probably have a problem using other platforms. If not – I recommend choosing between Android and iOS. It is necessary to see both in action and compare their pros and cons to decide which one like. It’s difficult to advise at this point.
Screen diagonal. Most convenient tablets come with a diagonal of 8 to 10 inches. Smaller diagonal makes the screen too small, while some of the current smartphone have 5.5 - 6 inch screens. Larger diagonals make the tablet too bulky. Determine where you want to use the tablet. If you need it for home use – look through the tablet models with 10-inch screens, but if you plan using your tablet on the go, it would be more convenient to choose 8 inches.
Memory. The most reasonable choice will depend on what you are going to use this device for. For Internet surfing you will be satisfied with a minimum amount of memory (typically 16 GB). If you watch a lot of movies or play games, it is worth choosing a 32 or 64 GB RAM. Please note that not all devices offer an additional slot for memory cards to extend the built-in memory. For example, Apple’s tablets don’t have this feature.
Here are the three main parameters to start with. Of course I haven’t covered additional hardware features. But it is clear that for playing games a lot of capabilities are required, while for watching a movie or surfing the Internet you don’t need that much and can stick to less expensive options.
