In short - for your daily tasks it is enough to have 8 GB RAM for 64-bit operating systems and 3 GB for 32-bit OS. Now I will provide you with some details:
How much RAM is enough:
For any non-professional computer use it is enough to have 8 GB of RAM, for most office tasks 8 GB is good enough. When getting deeper into details: for modern computer games, working with documents, photos, videos and web surfing 8 GB is usually enough, but there are exceptions.

If you have an old-fashioned 32-bit operating system - it will not use more than 3 GB of memory and there is no use to insert more. To find out, whether you have a 32 or 64-bit (modern) system, follow these steps:
1. Click the "Start" button, right-click on "Computer" (in older Windows versions it is called "My Computer"), then select "Properties":

2. In the window that appears after that you can see the type of your system (32-bit or 64-bit) and the amount of memory installed:

If a 32-bit system is your case, keep in mind it is not capable of working with more than 3 GB of RAM regardless of what hardware you use. If you have a 64-bit operating system type, then good news for you. This is a modern system and supports any amount of memory, but you probably don’t need more than 8 GB. Even most advanced games and programs work pretty well with 8 GB. Only in case you are using virtual machines for any purpose – it can be a reason to install 16 or 32 gigabytes of RAM.
